OpenAI Launches Text-to-Video Model “Sora” for ChatGPT Plus and Pro Users

Dec. 9 (Reuters) – OpenAI announced on Monday the release of its advanced AI model, Sora, which generates videos from text prompts. This new feature is now available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, marking another significant step in OpenAI’s expansion into multimodal AI technologies.

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI pioneered the generative AI revolution with the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. Sora is positioned to compete with similar tools offered by Meta, Google, and Stability AI’s Stable Video Diffusion.

Initially unveiled in February during a research preview limited to safety testers, Sora is now being rolled out more widely. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro can access the Sora Turbo version at no extra cost. According to OpenAI, pricing tailored for broader user groups is planned for release in early 2024.

Key Features of Sora:

  • Supports video generation up to 1080p resolution.
  • Videos can be up to 20 seconds long.
  • Offers multiple aspect ratios: widescreen, vertical, and square.

However, the model’s availability is currently restricted. Sora will not be accessible in EU countries, the UK, or Switzerland at launch but will be available in other regions where ChatGPT operates.

To address potential misuse, OpenAI is implementing strict safeguards. The company emphasized its commitment to blocking harmful content such as child sexual abuse material and sexual deepfakes.

“While uploads of people will be limited initially, we plan to expand this feature as we continue to enhance our deepfake prevention measures,” OpenAI stated in a blog post.

Sora represents a significant leap forward in generative AI, offering creative possibilities while addressing ethical concerns with robust security measures.
